about

Operation Exodus was an allied operation to repatriate prisoner's of war from Europe in the closing stages of world war 2. My Uncle Albie was a prisoner of war in Poland. First in Stalag XXA and then later in Stalag 344. Sadly the Lancaster bomber which was to take my Uncle and 30 other POW's to freedom crashed soon after take off and all were killed. Albie had kept a diary of his time as a POW but all appeared lost in the crash but 57 years after these diaries had found their way home from the USA! A book was written and for me the whole story became known. One thing that impressed me about the book was that Albie's writings were not as you might expect harrowing accounts of captivity but rather quite an upbeat yet realistic account of his time. Always finding something positive to describe. It was actually also a diary of lost love and his love of music and poetry also came through the pages. My song is a simple attempt to capture something of this. Friend and blues harp player Mark Cole came around to my house in Gloucestershire one night and we jammed several songs and pressed record. This was one of them. Mark's haunting harp really adds to the piece. Keith
